Casey City Council Report

Casey City Council held its regular meeting at 6 p.m. Monday, June 1, 2026. Alderman Jenkins was absent.

The council approved a resolution authorizing the closure of Route 49 for the Fourth of July parade.

Council members were notified that notices for the city’s annexation project have been sent out. The project aims to annex small pockets of properties surrounded by or adjacent to the city that were never formally added.

The council approved authorizing the execution of a construction agreement with B&T Drainage for a utility line extension.

Patty Richards updated the council on activities at the library. “Revolutionary Mary,” the story of Mary Katherine Goddard, will be featured as the StoryWalk selection for the month of June.

The library’s summer reading program will continue each Wednesday throughout June. On June 17, representatives from Lincoln Log Cabin State Historic Site will visit the library to give a presentation for children about Abraham Lincoln and local history.

Economic Development Director Tom Daughhetee reported that the Chamber of Commerce’s Motors on Main, originally scheduled for Sunday, July 5, has been canceled.

Daughhetee said a key member of the Wabash Valley Rodders, who help organize the event, has experienced health issues, leaving the group unable to commit to hosting the show. It was also noted that the Wabash Valley Rodders organize the car show at the Popcorn Festival and are actively seeking options to keep that event moving forward.

EMS Director David Craig reported that installation of the city’s new warning siren could begin as early as the week of June 8. The project includes replacing the existing pole and installing the new siren.

Mayor Mike Nichols said the city plans to provide the existing siren to the Village of Westfield after it is removed.

Installation was expected during either the week of June 8 or June 15.

Jeremiah Hanley reported on the Finance Committee meeting held prior to the regular council meeting. He said the committee is continuing work on the city budget. The committee received the airport’s budget during its May 26 meeting, and another Finance Committee meeting is scheduled for June 16.

During council comments, Hanley noted that council members are regularly reminded that the report they approve each month only reflects the collector’s revenue. He asked Treasurer Gail Lorton if council members could receive the more detailed financial reports he remembered receiving when he first joined the council.

The council also approved the following:

  • Bills totaling $1,124,800.45
  • Treasurer’s collection report for May totaling $647,045.17
