Midwest Stratospheric Data Systems will hold a public launch party for its X2Griffon high-altitude balloon mission Saturday, September 19, from 12:30 to 2 p.m. at the Casey First Church of the Nazarene located at 1000 U.S. Highway 40 in Casey.
The free, family-friendly event will give visitors an opportunity to watch the balloon launch, follow live tracking updates, meet members of the mission team and learn how the payload will collect atmospheric data as it climbs toward the stratosphere.
According to Midwest Stratospheric Data Systems, the approximately 1-pound X2Griffon payload is designed to collect temperature, pressure, humidity, wind and GPS data during an ascent projected to reach approximately 115,000 feet. The payload will then descend by parachute for recovery. Data collected during the mission is expected to be released publicly.
Launch Party Activities
The first 50 attendees will receive a free small foam glider while supplies last. Those who RSVP will be entered into a drawing for a large foam glider.
A coloring station will be available for children. The event will also include educational activities and opportunities for visitors interested in science, weather, amateur radio and high-altitude ballooning.

The event is weather permitting. Midwest Stratospheric Data Systems plans to release additional updates as the launch date approaches.
Weapons and alcohol will not be permitted on the premises. Attendees must follow the rules and ordinances of the City of Casey.
The launch party is sponsored by Casey First Church of the Nazarene and Pastor Brian Hancock. Midwest Stratospheric Data Systems is a member of the Stratospheric Ballooning Association.
Amateur Radio Participation
The Eastern Illinois Amateur Radio Club is inviting amateur radio operators, weather enthusiasts and other volunteers to participate in the mission.
The balloon will use the Automatic Packet Reporting System, commonly known as APRS, to transmit location and telemetry information during the flight. Licensed amateur radio operators are encouraged to monitor transmissions under the call sign KE9CFY and submit reports of packets they receive.
Volunteers may assist with:
- APRS monitoring and packet reception reports
- Flight tracking and trajectory prediction
- Mobile chase and recovery operations
- Launch operations
- Data analysis
- Educational outreach
- Remote forecasting and software support
Amateur radio clubs may participate as groups, and individuals may also volunteer.
The Eastern Illinois Amateur Radio Club, call sign W9GWF, serves amateur radio enthusiasts in Clark, Coles, Cumberland and Jasper counties. The club promotes amateur radio through education, community service and emergency communications.
