The philosophy of parks and recreation has always centered on connecting people to the land. It is about conservation, legacy, and the opportunity for progression. Clark County is home to a space that embodies this spirit perfectly.
Formally dedicated in 1958 following the completion of its lake, Lincoln Trail State Park spans 1,023 acres of land and water. It is a place where visitors can explore the same ground once occupied by the Kickapoo and Miami tribes.
For decades, the park served as a reliable location for camping, hiking, and fishing. However, in recent years, a distinct shift has occurred. Thanks to a group of volunteers, the park is more alive than ever.
The revitalization began in the spring of 2021. Superintendent Tom Hintz and local volunteer Tiffany Macke recognized that the park needed a spark to reach its full potential. They developed the idea for a “Friends Group” to boost the vitality of the area.
The response was immediate. Camp hosts Debbie and Randy Hutts, along with Alice and Steve Rutter, joined the cause. Together, they, along with other volunteers, formed the Friends of Lincoln Trail State Park (FOLTSP). Their mission is straightforward: to preserve local natural heritage and promote citizen awareness.

While the State of Illinois provides the land, the vibrance comes from the volunteers. Superintendent Hintz is clear about the reality of modern park management. Staffing is minimal. Without this group, the programs that local families and visitors love simply would not exist.
The Friends group is about more than just fun. They have become an unsuspecting safety net. Hintz notes that “during previous administrations when parks were facing closures, those with active Friends Groups were often left alone.”
Memberships are a driving force keeping activities and volunteer opportunities going. Single memberships are $15 annually, and family memberships are just $25. It’s more than money though. Hintz also says that “volunteer efforts ebb and flow so when these folks decide to take a break, I hope to see other folks from the community step up and keep this going.”
By purchasing essential equipment, the group has become a critical operational partner. Some of their contributions include a DR Mower, security cameras, and two-way radios to increase safety and new signage and lighting for better accessibility. They’ve also added amenities such as a basketball court, kayak launch and nature center. In fact, FOLTSP group has been so active and so successful that in 2023 they were awarded the Illinois Department of Natural Resources Outstanding Volunteers of the Year award.
Notable dates for 2026 include the Annual Fun Run/Walk held on April 18, the Kids Fishing Event held June 20, Christmas in July featuring Santa and reindeer on July 18, and the Fall Frolic held October 2-4!
